Warning: My book club's argument about a character choice got really messy

Honestly, we were debating if the hero should have forgiven the betrayal. Tbh, it spiraled into yelling and some folks left early feeling upset. Ngl, how do you keep discussions from getting out of hand?

Set clear rules for debate before hitting sensitive plot points. This keeps the focus on the characters and not personal attacks. A quick break works wonders when tempers start to flare.

Honestly, the real trick is picking books where the "right" choice isn't obvious. If a character's decision is super black and white, of course people will fight. But like @oliver_campbell9 said, you need rules for the gray area stuff. Maybe before the meeting, everyone writes down one reason for and against the character's choice. That forces you to see the other side first. It stops people from just digging in and yelling their own take.

A rotating moderator works well for us, expanding on @oliver_campbell9's idea. They enforce a no-interruption rule and can call a quick break.

After how many warnings do you call that quick break?
