A customer told me my book hinges were too tight - totally right
I was making these tight, drum-tight hinges because I thought that meant quality. A guy who restores 18th-century books pointed out my covers were starting to crack the text block after a year. Now I leave a 2mm gap in the hinge and my books actually lay flat - has anyone else had to unlearn what they thought was right?

My buddy tried tight hinges on his guitar cases and warped three of them before learning the hard way.

Wait, so a 2mm gap fixed it? Sounds more like a bandaid than a real solution if you ask me.

Think about thermal expansion though. Metal heats up and expands, 2mm might be the sweet spot when everything's at operating temp. A tight gap when cold could mean zero clearance when hot.
