A library repair day in Portland made me ditch my bone folder for good
Last month I volunteered at the Multnomah County Library's book rescue workshop, and the head conservator watched me crease a spine with my trusty bone folder. She pulled me aside and said, 'you're crushing the fibers, not folding them', then handed me a teflon folder that cost maybe $9 at a local art supply shop. I spent the next 4 hours redoing every fold on a stack of 20 worn paperbacks, and the difference was night and day. The teflon glides instead of burnishing, so the pages don't get those shiny stress lines that scream amateur. I went home and tossed my bone folder in a drawer, it only comes out for leather now. Has anyone else switched materials after seeing a pro work, or am I the last one to get this memo?

Bone folders are for leather, teflons for paper, that simple honestly.
