Hot take on glue: Should we all be using PVA instead of animal hide glue for tightback bindings?

Last week at a workshop in Portland I watched a guy with 30 years experience slap hide glue on a spine like it was the only option, then the librarian across the table said PVA is stronger and won't rot over time, so which side is actually right for hard use books?

Nah, hide glue lasts centuries if you know how to use it right.

Eh, PVA's fine if you want a book that won't fall apart in fifty years.

That 30 year pro is stuck in the same rut my dad gets in with his rusty old tools.
