My first practice book came out ugly, then the third one in June actually looked bound, here's what changed
I finished my first practice book back in April and honestly it looked like a kid glued two boards to some paper. The spine was lumpy, the boards were way bigger than the text block, and the headbands were a joke. Then in June I did a third one using a proper bone folder and a cheap punching cradle I made from scrap pine, and the difference was night and day. The main thing was I stopped guessing at measurements and started cutting the boards exactly flush with the text block, plus I pressed the whole thing under a stack of old textbooks for two days instead of one night. I also switched from white glue straight out of the bottle to a mix I spread thin with a brush, and the spines stopped cracking when I opened them. What did you all change first that made your bindings look less homemade? I'm still working on clean headbands so any tips there would help too.
