Switched from PVA to wheat paste on my last 3 rebinds and the spine flexibility is night and day
For my first 40 or so rebinds I used straight PVA because it was easy and dried fast. Last month I tried wheat paste on a 1930s dictionary I picked up at an estate sale in Akron, and the joints actually flexed instead of cracking. Just finished my third book with it and I'm never going back for hollow-back work. Mixed it 1 part flour to 4 parts water and cooked it slow on the stove. Anyone got a favorite paste recipe or do you just buy the pre-made stuff?
