Appreciation post: The volunteer tomato plant that showed up in my garden last spring
I planted exactly zero tomatoes this year but somehow ended up with 12 of them growing out of my compost pile. It's like nature just decided I needed a tomato patch (and honestly it was right). My neighbor insists on buying those fancy hybrid seedlings from the nursery every year for $4 a pop. But my mystery plant produced 8 pounds of fruit before I even knew what variety it was. How do you all feel about letting volunteer plants do their thing versus buying starts?

Why is it that the ones we don't plan for always do the best? I read somewhere that volunteer plants are often tougher because they've already proven they can survive in your specific soil and climate without any help from us. It's like they just know what to do. Maybe those expensive starts get too coddled at the nursery then can't handle a little heat wave or a dry spell. I'm starting to think our compost piles know better than the garden centers do.
