I finally got my hands on a variegated monstera cutting from a plant swap in Portland
I was so excited I put it straight into water like I always do... but after three weeks it just rotted instead of rooting. Turns out the node was damaged during the swap and I didn't notice. Has anyone else had a cutting fail because of a hidden problem like that?

That "hidden problem" thing happens everywhere, like buying used gear online that looks fine in pics but is broken inside. You can't really trust surface appearances with anything secondhand. It's a gamble that sometimes just doesn't pay off.

You're right, it goes beyond just gear. It's the same with used cars or even houses. A fresh coat of paint can hide a lot of serious issues. The real cost isn't just the money you lose, it's the time and stress of fixing the problem you didn't see coming. That gamble can leave you feeling pretty burned on the whole idea of buying secondhand. It makes you wonder if the small savings are ever worth the big risk.

That feeling of being burned is so real. I bought a used car once that looked clean, just like troy_price said about the fresh paint. A month later, the transmission started slipping. The repair cost wiped out all my savings and then some. It wasn't just the money, it was the weeks of stress figuring out how to get to work. Sometimes that gamble makes the peace of mind of buying new feel priceless.
