I finally stopped watering my pothos on a schedule after my sister pointed at the pot
I used to water my pothos every Sunday like clockwork for two years, and it kept dropping leaves all over my kitchen counter in Austin. My sister stayed with me in March and asked why the soil was bone dry four inches down while the top was still damp, which made zero sense to me at the time. I stuck my finger in and realized the top inch was wet but everything below was dust, so my weekly cup of water was basically doing nothing. Now I soak the whole pot in the sink until water runs out the bottom holes, then wait until the first couple inches feel dry before doing it again. Three months in and it has pushed out six new leaves. Does anyone else water from the top and wonder why the roots never get a real drink?
Roots actually grow toward where the water goes, so top watering just trains them to hang out in that shallow wet layer while the bottom stays dead. Soaking forces them down and lets the whole root ball drink instead of just the surface.
