My monstera's roots rotted in 4 days after I switched to a self watering pot
I moved my 3 year old monstera into one of those self watering pots back in March and noticed the leaves drooping by day 4. When I pulled it out the roots were brown mush because the soil never dried out between waterings. Has anyone found a self watering setup that actually works for aroids, or should I just go back to a plain terracotta pot with a saucer?
That line about the soil never drying out between waterings is the whole problem in a nutshell, and it's the same trap as those automatic pet feeders or smart thermostats that think they know better than you do. Self watering pots work fine for ferns and peace lilies but aroids want that wet dry cycle, so the pot is basically solving a problem you didn't have. Just go back to terracotta and water when the top few inches feel dry, the plant was happy for 3 years that way.
