My neighbor swears by pulling dead blooms off her roses, I say leave them for the birds
She stopped me at the fence in Tacoma last Saturday and said cutting spent blooms forces new growth, but I keep mine on through fall and counted 14 goldfinches on them. Are we both right depending on the plant, or is one of us wasting our time out there?
Tbh "one of us wasting our time" made me laugh because I've killed more roses than I've saved, so I'm not the guy to ask. But yeah, you're both right, deadheading pushes new blooms on repeat bloomers while hips feed the birds if you let them ride. I'd just split the difference and leave a few stems for the goldfinches.
