Pro tip: My plant hobby just helped seal a deal at work
I talk about plants all the time with my coworkers. A client overheard and asked for help with their backyard. I suggested some native shrubs that thrive in our area. They were so happy, they expanded the painting contract. Really PROUD to see my passion pay off like this.

For years I thought keeping work and hobbies separate was the only way to go. Reading @zarat38's post totally flipped that for me. I saw a client at the garden center last month and we just talked soil mixes for twenty minutes. Next session they booked three more months of training without even being asked. It's not about the plants, it's that people want to work with someone who gets them as a person first. Have you ever had a casual interest pay off in a weird way like that?

That's so cool when a personal thing crosses over like that. I mean my succulents have started like ten conversations at the bar with total strangers. It's wild how a simple shared interest can totally break the ice. Felt awesome to give a few cuttings to a regular who was having a rough week too. Makes the whole hobby feel way bigger than just watering plants.

Totally get that "bigger than just watering plants" feeling, though my version is mostly killing plants and then trying to explain it to people. My fiddle leaf fig started one conversation that was just a stranger asking if it was plastic because it looked "so sad and fake." Felt REAL awesome. I've never given a cutting, I've just had friends take a dying one off my hands out of pity. Makes the hobby feel bigger, like a shared community failure we can all PRETEND never happened.
