Shoutout to my grandpa's old plant ID book versus the app I use now

His 1978 Peterson Field Guide had these hand-drawn cross sections that taught me way more than just snapping a photo for an instant answer. Anyone else feel like they learned more slowly with physical books?

The drawings forced you to actually look at the plant's parts. Apps are fast but you don't always remember why something is what it is.

Remember my friend who tried to learn trees with an app? He could name them fast, but then his kid asked why a pine was a pine... he totally blanked. The app never made him notice the needle bundles or cone shapes, just gave him the answer.

Tbh that's exactly the problem with apps - they give you the quick answer but skip over all the details that actually make you understand it. Ngl, I had the same thing happen with bird identification apps, could name every bird in my backyard but couldn't tell you why a sparrow was a sparrow until I went back to old field guides. It's way slower but actually having to look at the wing bars and beak shapes is what makes it stick.
