The groundskeeper at Highland Park showed me why my hydrangeas never bloom
I was walking through Highland Park in Rochester two weeks ago and stopped to ask a groundskeeper why the hydrangeas there were covered in blue blooms while mine at home just grow leaves. He said the ones in the park get 4 hours of direct morning sun and shade the rest of the day, and mine are probably baking on the south side of the house. I moved all 6 of my plants to the east bed that weekend. Has anyone else had luck with an east facing spot for hydrangeas, or is afternoon shade the real trick?
My neighbor had the same issue and moved hers to the east side last spring, and she finally got blooms this year. She said the morning sun dries the leaves off so they don't get rot, and the afternoon shade keeps them from frying. So yeah, sounds like you did the right thing.
