Update: My entire batch of heirloom tomato seedlings got leggy overnight
I started them in a south-facing window in my apartment, but we had three straight days of heavy rain and cloud cover. Came home from work yesterday and they were all stretched thin and flopping over. What's the best way to salvage seedlings that have already gotten too tall?

That three day stretch of cloud cover is brutal for seedlings. When you buried the stems deeper, did you notice if they started to root along the buried part at all? I'm always worried about rot when I try that fix.

Ugh, that's the worst! I swear leggy seedlings are a universal sign of modern life, like we're all just stretching for a little more light. You can try burying the stems deeper when you repot them, and get a cheap shop light right over them ASAP. It's crazy how fast they give up when the sun ducks out for a few days.

Universal sign of modern life" - you think it's a metaphor for something bigger?

My basil seedlings did that last week, just two days of gray weather and they were all spindly and weak. It really does feel like everything, plants included, is getting more fragile and needs perfect conditions just to do the basic stuff.
