Used to just water my pothos when I remembered... now I actually check the soil moisture first

For like 2 years I was just dumping water in whenever the leaves looked droopy. Turns out I was basically drowning it half the time and starving it the other half. Learned that trick from a lady at a plant swap in Austin last spring. She said stick your finger in two inches and if it's dry then water. My pothos has like 4 new vines since then. Anybody else have a basic plant care skill they wish they learned way sooner?

Bottom watering saved my snake plant after I nearly drowned it.

Man that's how it goes with so many things though, right? Like cooking, I used to just throw spices in randomly and wondered why stuff tasted flat. Then my buddy showed me to actually taste as I go and adjust little by little. Same with my car, I used to just wait for the oil light to come on before checking anything. Turns out checking tire pressure every few weeks saves you a lot of headaches. It's weird how we all kinda stumble into doing things the hard way before someone just shows us the simple trick that makes everything click.

and another thing with pothos people don't realize is they actually like being a little rootbound lmao. I put mine in too big of a pot for like a year cause I thought bigger pot = happier plant. Totally wrong, the soil stays wet forever and the roots just rot. Had to chop the whole thing back and start over. Also watering from the bottom changed my life, I just set the pot in a dish of water for 15 minutes and let it suck up what it needs. Way less guessing involved. My friend who grows monsteras for a living told me that one and I felt so dumb for not thinking of it myself.
