Vent: I hit 500 species on my life list in Austin and half came from one weedy lot
I kept waiting for some big trip to push my count past 500, then last week I tallied up 43 species in a single empty lot off Airport Blvd in Austin, and the pink evening primrose and hedge parsley in that gravel did more than any hike this year, so am I wrong for thinking we ignore the junk spots way too much?
Man, this makes me think about how the timing of when you visit a junk lot matters way more than people realize. Those spots get mowed, sprayed, or paved with zero warning, so the window to catch stuff like your primrose and hedge parsley might only be a few weeks before it's gone for good. A big park is always gonna be there next year, but that empty lot off Airport Blvd might be a mattress store by spring. Maybe the real lesson is to check those spots often and write down what you see, since nobody else is keeping track of them.
