I finally fixed my $19 wobbling fan with a rubber band, but is a cheap fix worse than trashing it?
The blade was loose after 4 months, so I wrapped a hair tie around the hub and it's been silent for 2 weeks now. Do you rig cheap stuff back to life or just toss it and eat the loss?
Watched a buddy do almost the same thing with his desk fan, except he used a bread tie twisted around the hub. Ran fine for a month, then the blade let go at full speed and shot across his desk like a tiny frisbee, missing his coffee by an inch. He still counts it as a win since nothing broke. The way I see it, a rubber band fix costs nothing and buys you weeks, so run it till it quits. Just keep an eye on it, because when a blade finally comes loose it does not go quietly. Cheap fixes are fine as long as you know the clock is ticking.
