I finally stopped fighting my mortar and started matching the color before mixing
Used to just grab whatever bag was open and go. Last month on a house in Akron I had to tear out a whole wall because the new mortar stood out like a sore thumb against the old stuff. My foreman walked over and said "you see that tone difference? That's a redo." Now I wet a small test patch and compare it to the existing joints before I even load the mixer. Takes 10 minutes but saves a full day of chipping. Anyone else burn themselves on color matching or am I the only one who learned the hard way?

Saw my buddy do the same thing down in Columbus, and it cost him worse, he had to rip out a fireplace surround. He thought he could eyeball it with a dry mix, and when it cured it looked like a gray ghost against the antique brick. @karencampbell knows that feeling, I bet. He told me he spent two weekends with a chisel and a dust mask, cussing every time a chunk of old mortar crumbled. Now he carries a little plastic bag of the existing joint dust in his truck for every job. Takes longer to set up, but he sleeps better at night, lol.
