I was laying a herringbone patio for 5 years before a guy in Philly pointed out my starter course was backwards.

That's the whole thing with learning on your own. You can get really good at the wrong way to do something. It's why a second pair of eyes is so important.

Man, that hits home. I taught myself to lay laminate flooring by watching a few videos. Did my whole living room before a friend came over and asked why I didn't stagger the seams. I had all these perfect lines running across the room, and it looked so wrong once someone said it. You just get locked into your own method.

Spot on about needing a second look. Drew_mitchell nailed it with the whole getting good at the wrong method thing. That's why you gotta swallow your pride and ask.

Is there such a thing as a wrong way if you think it looks good at the time?
