My dad told me to stop rushing the first course on a chimney job
We were fixing a chimney in Albany last week. He said 'If the base is off by an inch, the top will be off by a foot.' I always wanted to get to the fun part, the brickwork. Now I see why he spent a whole morning just setting the forms. Anyone else have a simple tip that changed how you start a job?

Yeah, I used to think that was a waste of time too.

Totally get what you mean about thinking it's a waste! But here's a thing I realized: sometimes the "waste of time" part is actually the whole point. It gives your brain a break from trying to be useful all the time, and that's when you can stumble on a good idea or just feel less stressed. It's like the useless stuff is secretly useful because it has no pressure attached.

That "base off by an inch" thing is so true. I read once that good prep work is just paying the problem forward, so you don't have to fix it later. It feels slow but it actually saves time.
