Serious question, did anyone else think laser levels were just a gimmick at first?

I remember when they first started showing up on sites about 15 years ago. I was working a big commercial job in Columbus and this young foreman pulled one out. I thought, 'Great, another toy that'll break in a week.' We were building a long brick wall and he set it up. I watched that red line stay perfectly level for the whole run. It cut our time setting up lines by more than half, easy. I had to eat my words. The one that got me was a DeWalt model, it took a real beating and kept working. Now I wouldn't go back to a water level for a straight run. What was the first tool you were wrong about?

I was totally in that camp, thought they were just a fancy way to waste money. My old boss made me use one to hang kitchen cabinets and I fought him on it the whole time. Watching that line stay put while I worked down the wall completely shut me up. Now I keep one in my truck at all times.

The real test is when you're working alone and don't have a second pair of hands. That laser line becomes your silent helper, keeping everything straight without any chatter. It turns a two person job into something you can manage by yourself.

My uncle swore by chalk lines for years (the kind you snap, you know). He finally tried a laser level on a deck project and got this quiet look on his face, like his whole world just shifted. Never heard him argue for chalk again.
