Serious question, mortar mix or pre-blend for a big garden wall job?
Just finished a 50-foot dry stack garden wall in Denver and had to pick between mixing my own Type N from scratch or using a pre-blended bag. I went with the pre-blend to save time, but the color consistency was a bit off in spots. Anyone else run into this with pre-mixed mortar on feature walls?

My buddy in Boulder mixed his own for a patio and it looked great, but he spent a whole weekend just on the mud. I used a pre-blend on a short wall once and got three different shades of gray from the same pallet of bags. Looked like a weird modern art project, lmao. I guess the lesson is you either get a workout or you get a surprise.

Oh man, that's the perfect summary of DIY concrete right there. I mean, you either destroy your back mixing forever trying to get it perfect, or you roll the dice on a bagged mix and just accept your new abstract art wall. My neighbor's walkway looks like a patchwork quilt of sadness from different dye lots.
