Switched from a string line to a laser level for long walls, and my corners finally line up
For about 6 years I set every long wall with a string line and a folding rule, and my corners were always off by a quarter inch or so. Got tired of fixing it, so I picked up a $90 laser level in March and tried it on a 40 foot garage wall in Boise. First course went down dead straight, no sag in the middle, and I had the whole run checked in 15 minutes instead of an hour. Thing I did not expect was how much faster the leads go up when the first course is right. I still keep the string in the truck for short runs and outside corners, it just feels quicker. Anyone else switch over, and do you trust it when the sun is hitting the wall hard?
String lines have worked for hundreds of years for a reason, and they don't need batteries or a tripod that gets bumped. A $90 laser is not the same as a $900 one, and cheap ones drift with temp changes, so that 40 foot wall might read dead on at 9am and be a hair off by noon. Plus you said yourself the string still comes out for outside corners, so you did not really replace anything, you just added a tool. Sun hitting the wall hard is the real killer, the beam washes out and you end up squinting at a dot you can barely see, which is exactly when guys start guessing.
