Thought mortar mixers were overkill till I saw the crew down in Tulsa last month
I always mixed mortar by hand with a hoe and a wheelbarrow, figured the $210 savings on a mixer was worth the extra sweat on smaller jobs. Last month I helped out on a church wall in Tulsa and the guy had a little barrel mixer that churned out a batch while I was still breaking up clumps, and the consistency was dead on every time. Am I missing something, or is a paddle mixer on a drill the way to go for smaller repair jobs?
I spent about 20 minutes last weekend fighting a stiff batch with my old hoe like some kind of caveman, so yeah, I get where you're coming from. For small repair jobs I've had good luck with a paddle mixer on a half inch drill, but you have to keep the speed low or you whip air into it and the mix goes crumbly on you. A barrel mixer really shines when you're doing a full wall like that church job, since the batch size and timing stay the same every time. For patching a few spots here and there, the drill and paddle is plenty and way less to haul around.
