Bought a $5 dented can of beans, ended up with a free cooking class from a stranger at the bus stop
So I'm at this discount grocery in Cleveland last month, grabbing a can of black beans that was all banged up. The label was half torn off but hey, 5 bucks for a 12 pack was too good. On the way home, this older guy sees me juggling the cans and starts chatting. Turns out he used to run a food truck. He looked at the dented cans and goes "those are fine, but you gotta rinse them twice or your chili will taste like tin." Then he just started rattling off his whole budget chili recipe right there on the corner. I tried it that night with some cheap ground turkey and it honestly beat anything I've made. Now I can't stop looking at dented cans. Anyone else get random cooking wisdom from a stranger like that?
Dented cans are usually a steal, just check for leaks or bulging first. The rinse trick is real too, that metallic taste comes from the lining breaking down a bit. My grandma always soaked her beans and added a splash of vinegar at the end to cut the tin flavor. That old food truck guy probably has a hundred more tips, hope you run into him again.
