Scratch chili vs store-bought kit, which is actually cheaper in the long run?
I've been doing the math on my last 4 chili batches. The kit costs $6 but only feeds 4, while my scratch version with dried beans and canned tomatoes came to $9 but made 8 bowls, so the per-meal cost was way lower. Do you guys count leftovers as savings or just look at the upfront price?
How much does your time factor in though? Like if the scratch batch takes an extra hour of chopping, soaking, and simmering, is that hour worth the $3 you saved? If you'd otherwise be sitting on the couch it's basically free, but if you're skipping something else to cook, that changes the math. I track my chili cost per bowl too and scratch usually wins, but only when I'm already home doing other stuff. On a busy week the kit is cheaper for me once I count the time.
