Why does everyone buy bagged salad when it costs double?

I keep seeing people in my grocery store grabbing those $4 bags of pre-washed salad mix, and it drives me crazy. Last week I priced it out: a head of romaine costs about $1.50 and lasts me 4 meals, while that bag gives you maybe 2 salads. Plus I swear the bagged stuff goes bad in 3 days no matter what I do. My whole head of lettuce stays fresh for a week wrapped in a paper towel. Am I missing something or do people just hate washing lettuce that much? Any tricks to keep bagged salad from rotting so fast?

My coworker bought a bag, forgot it in her fridge for two days, and opened it to find a whole science experiment growing inside. Never seen her buy one since.

Honestly, two days in the fridge isn't that long. Sounds more like she left it out on the counter for a while before putting it in there.
