Always booked hostels until a guy at the bus stop told me to try a monastery stay in Italy

I used to think hostels were the only way to save money in Europe... but this old traveler in Florence told me monasteries rent rooms for like 30 euros a night, quiet and with breakfast. Changed my whole approach for my Italy trip last spring. Has anyone else found a hidden spot like that?

lol 30 euros for a quiet room and breakfast sounds way better than sharing a bunk with some dude who snores like a lawnmower. I tried a monastery in Siena once and legit felt like I was gonna get cursed for putting my backpack on the bed. No WiFi either so I just sat there staring at a crucifix for three hours. 10/10 would recommend for the cultural experience though.

lol staring at a crucifix for three hours is a mood. I did a monastery stay in Assisi and the only entertainment was a single rosary that glowed in the dark. 30 euros is a steal when you compare it to paying 50 for a hostel bed that smells like feet and regret. Wake up at 5am for matins, eat stale bread, zero distractions. Kind of wish every hotel had that rule about not putting stuff on the bed though, keeps things simple.

Lol a glowing rosary sounds less distracting than my own brain on silent mode.

Wait, wasn't the whole point of traveling to actually get out and see stuff instead of staring at a wall?
