Chose a hostel over a hotel in Barcelona and saved $400 in 5 nights

Went to Barcelona last month. Hostel was $30 a night, private room. Hotel wanted $110 for the same area. The hostel had free walking tours and a shared kitchen. Met people from 6 different countries. Only downside was thin walls but earplugs fixed that. Anyone else gone the hostel route and actually liked it better than a hotel?

The free walking tour is honestly the best perk, saved me like $50 easy.

Made $400 richer but felt like a broke college kid again when my roommate snored like a chainsaw. @lily57 totally right about those walking tours though, best bang for zero bucks.

Man people really get worked up over $400? Like it changes your life that much? I've stayed in both and honestly the only difference is whether you want to actually sleep or not.
