Had to pick between a 12 hour bus ride or a $200 flight to Bangkok

I was in Chiang Mai trying to get to Bangkok last month and the bus was 600 baht but took 12 hours, while the flight was 200 bucks American. I went with the bus because I'm cheap and figured I'd sleep through it. Big mistake - the AC was broken and some guy's chicken kept falling on my foot. Has anyone else done a long bus ride in SE Asia and regretted it?

Night bus to Hanoi broke down twice in the middle of nowhere.

Man that's the worst kind of travel luck right there (especially at night when you just wanna sleep). At least you had a story to tell from it, broken down buses in the middle of nowhere always make for good memories later on.

Oh man, I gotta say that chicken thing is hilarious but also awful at the same time lol. But I think you might have the price mixed up a bit - 600 baht is only like 17 bucks, so that bus was way cheaper than you thought. The flight being $200 is about 7,000 baht which is actually a pretty normal price for last minute tickets. I've done the night bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai before and honestly it wasn't that bad, but I always bring a hoodie for the AC because they blast it like crazy. Your broken AC situation sounds like a nightmare though, I would have been so cranky lol.
