Hitting $500 on a 9 day trip through Thailand felt off
I tracked every single baht on a recent trip to Chiang Mai and Bangkok. 9 days, food, hostels, buses, temples, a cooking class, even a few beers. Total came to $498.70. I kept double checking because it felt too low. I planned for $800. The cooking class was the biggest single cost at $35. I ate street food most days and only sat down at a restaurant twice. My Sim card cost $8 and lasted the whole trip. The overnight train saved me two nights of hostel fees. Has anyone else hit a travel budget number that made them question what they were missing?

That math actually tracks pretty well for how cheap Thailand can be if you stick to local stuff. The overnight train is a huge hack that most tourists overlook, and street food in Chiang Mai is genuinely a dollar or two per meal if you know where to look. Missing the $300 you budgeted just means you planned for the tourist version of Thailand but actually experienced the real one.
