Hostel in Barcelona made me ditch the guidebooks for good

Stayed at this tiny place in Barcelona back in 2019, like 12 euros a night. The owner just drew a map on a napkin with his favorite cheap spots, no tourist traps. Honestly, haven't bought a travel guide since.

Wait, 12 euros a night? That's absolutely wild to me. I thought those kinds of prices stopped existing after 2015, especially anywhere in Spain. Your mileage may vary, but that napkin map sounds way more useful than any glossy guidebook I've ever bought.

Did I mention I once paid 8 euros for a room with a window that faced a broom closet?

That napkin map thing is honestly the way to go, I've had locals in random hostels draw me stuff that led to the best meals of my life. Those glossy guidebooks always seem to steer you toward overpriced spots that pay to be listed anyway. Once you get a real person's recommendations you realize how much of that travel advice is just recycled hype.
