Everyone online swears by dorm beds to cut costs in expensive cities. I paid $38 a night for a 12-bed room in Oslo last month. Between the locker rental, the paid breakfast, the laundry fees, and the earplugs I had to buy because someone snored like a chainsaw, my daily costs hit $55. Meanwhile a private Airbnb room outside the center was $48 with free coffee and quiet. I slept better, ate grocery store food, and stopped nickel and diming myself. Has anyone else found that hostels make sense in some countries but not the priciest ones? What is your cutoff?
