Lost $60 on a 'guaranteed' sleeper bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai that broke down twice in one night.
The AC died at 2 AM in the middle of nowhere and the driver pulled over for 3 hours trying to fix it with duct tape and a wrench, has anyone else had better luck just booking a cheap flight instead?

Guaranteed" and "sleeper bus" in the same sentence is always a red flag... I've been on those cheap buses before and they're basically a gamble every time. That duct tape fix is pretty much standard for those drivers, they'll patch anything up just to get you moving again. You can usually find flights from Bangkok to Chiang Mai for like $30-40 if you book a week ahead and skip the checked bag. Even with the airport hassle you'll save like 8 hours of your life and not be stuck on the side of the road at 2 AM. Just check Nok Air or Air Asia, they run that route like every hour and it's way more reliable than those buses.

Oh yeah because duct tape is totally "part of the charm" until you're stranded in the middle of nowhere with no cell service. There's having a story and then there's just having bad luck honestly.

Some of us actually enjoy the chaos of a cheap bus ride, @wyatt135. The duct tape fix is part of the charm, like a real life game of chance. Flying is for people who don't want a story to tell.
