Missed my flight in Denver, found a cheap standby loophole

Last month I got to the gate 10 minutes late for my 6am out of Denver because the security line snaked past the food court. Instead of dropping $400 on a new ticket, I asked the agent about standby. She said I could hop on the same route later that day for just $75 if I waited in the terminal. I grabbed a bench, ate a $3 gas station breakfast, and caught the 1pm with a window seat. Has anyone else talked to the agent directly instead of using the app when they miss a connection?
