My hostel locker lock jammed and left me stranded in Montreal
Flew into Montreal last Friday for a cheap weekend trip and stayed at a hostel near the old port. The lock on my locker just froze up after I locked my passport and cash inside, tried for 20 minutes before the front desk guy came over with a screwdriver and a wire hanger. He popped it open in like 2 minutes, said it happens all the time with those cheap combo locks. I spent an extra $12 on a small cable lock from a nearby dollar store and it worked fine for the rest of the trip. Has anyone else had locker trouble at hostels, or do you just leave your stuff out and trust the room?

Trusting a room full of strangers with your passport is like playing Russian roulette with a wallet, except you don't even get the fun of a spinning cylinder. The wire hanger trick is basically a rite of passage at hostels, next to burnt toast in the kitchen and someone snoring louder than a lawnmower. My own locker ate my socks once in Lisbon, and I had to wear the same pair for three days while the front desk hunted for bolt cutters. You got off easy with the dollar store fix, honestly. Good on you for learning the first rule of hostel life: never trust a lock that costs less than a sandwich. Probably saved yourself from a much more creative break-in story for the flight home.
