My old way of finding a place to stay was a total mess...

I used to just show up in a city, like Prague, and walk around with my backpack asking at hostels if they had a bed. Half the time I'd end up paying 40 euros for a bunk in a loud room over a bar because it was the only spot left. The change came after a rainy night in Krakow where I slept on a bench in the train station. Now, I use an app to message people directly who rent out a spare room or couch. Last trip, I stayed in a nice apartment in Budapest for 8 dollars a night because the guy was out of town and just wanted someone to feed his cat. It's less about booking a room and more about making a quick, weird deal with a local. Has anyone else had luck with this kind of last-minute, person-to-person setup? I'm always worried I'll get a 'no' at the worst time.

That bench sleep in Krakow wasn't about saving cash, it was a total fail with no other options... The stress of a last-minute app deal is way different, more like waiting for a friend to confirm plans. You're not just saving forty bucks, you're trading a loud hostel for a quiet apartment with a cat. The old way felt desperate, but this new way feels like solving a puzzle.

Is sleeping on a bench really that bad if it saves you forty bucks? Sounds like you traded one kind of stress for another, always waiting for a text back. But hey, if feeding a cat for eight bucks works, who am I to judge the weird deals?

Ever sleep on a bench and actually get rest? Or is it just lying there stressed about cops or rain?
