My uncle's 'rent a car at the airport' advice backfired in Denver
My uncle swore that booking a rental car on the spot at DEN always gets you a free upgrade. Tried it last March, stood in line for 45 minutes, and got a subcompact with a cracked windshield. The guy at the counter said upgrades only happen if they oversell, and they had 12 cars sitting empty. Paid $68 extra for a bigger car after my knees hit the steering wheel. He still won't admit his trick is dead. Anyone else get burned by a family member's outdated travel tip?

Ha, I gotta disagree with you on this one. The trick still works, but only if you hit the right window. I fly into Denver a lot for work and I've gotten upgrades maybe half the time when I show up without a reservation. You gotta go late at night or early morning when the computer shows they're overbooked. March is spring break chaos, that's the worst time to try it. Your uncle's advice isn't dead, it's just got a narrow window of when it actually works. Sounds like you just got unlucky with timing and a bad agent.
