One conversation about hostels flipped my whole booking process

Last week I was waiting for a delayed flight in Atlanta and got to talking with a guy who'd been backpacking through South America for 6 months. He said he never books a bed more than 2 days ahead, just walks into neighborhoods and haggles with the front desk in person. I'd been planning every stop for my 3-week trip to Colombia and had already locked in 4 hostels at $18 to $25 a night. He showed me his phone, he was paying $9 a night in Medellin for the same kind of bunk. That made me cancel two of my reservations and now I'm trying the walk-in method for the first leg in Bogota. Has anyone else found that last-minute booking beat the advance deals, or did I just get lucky with one guy's story?

And the walk-in price usually gets cheaper the longer you stay.
