Pro tip: I tried to save $15 on a hostel in Prague by sleeping in a converted prison cell last month

Prison hostels are a weird thing people don't really talk about... they market them as this cool adventure but the reality is that the history sticks to the walls in a heavy way. I stayed in one in Poland a few years back and it was the same damp, bleach smell thing. The thing nobody mentions is how the energy of the place messes with your sleep. It's not just the room itself, it's knowing what happened there. You can't un-know that. For fifteen bucks you get a story, sure, but sometimes you pay for the memory in a different way.

Converted prison cell sounds intense. Was it actually worth the fifteen bucks?

Honestly, for fifteen bucks it was a total letdown. It was basically just a tiny, damp room with a bunk bed. The worst part was the smell, like old bleach and something else I couldn't place. You could still see where the bars were on the window. Felt more sad than cool. I wouldn't do it again.

That "old bleach" smell is part of the story for me. I get why it felt sad, but I'd take that over a boring room any day. Cole549, I'd say it was worth it for the weird memory.
