Rant: My trip to Bangkok cost half as much this year because I finally stopped booking hotels.
Last year I spent $1200 on a 10-day stay in a decent hotel near Khao San Road. This time I booked a private room in a guesthouse for 6 nights and then took an overnight train to Chiang Mai, saving over $600. Has anyone else made a big switch that cut their lodging costs in half?

Guesthouses are such a game changer for saving money.

Right? They cut your lodging cost in half. I've found the local hosts often give much better tips than a hotel concierge too. It really is the best way to stretch your travel budget.

Oh man, the tips are the best part... my last host told me about this tiny bakery that made these insane pastries the guidebooks never mention. Saved a ton on the room and then spent all the savings on extra croissants.
