Serious question, has anyone else tried the 'free city tour' thing?
I was in Berlin and joined one of those 'free' walking tours, where you just tip at the end. The guide was great, and I only paid 5 euros for a 3 hour tour. It felt way better than a fixed price one. What other cities have you found these in?

Honestly, the quality can be all over the place. I had a terrible one in Prague where the guide spent half the time complaining about tourists. Since they work for tips, some try to be crowd pleasers instead of giving real info. It's a gamble. You have to check recent reviews for each specific guide, not just the company. A good fixed price tour can sometimes be more reliable, even if it costs a bit more up front.

Sounds like that guide missed the memo that we're the ones paying for his bad mood!

Totally agree with both of you. Had a tour guide in Rome who clearly hated his job. He rushed through everything and gave one word answers to questions. Felt like we were bothering him just by being there. Checking reviews for the actual guide is smart advice, I never thought of that. The whole point is to learn and have a good time, not to fund someone's bad day.
