Showerthought: a guy in the hostel kitchen in Lisbon said he books flights on Tuesday at 3am and I checked it
I was making pasta in the hostel kitchen in Lisbon and this guy from Dublin said he only books flights on Tuesdays around 3am because that's when the cheap seats get released. I thought it was nonsense but I pulled up fares from Boston to Dublin the next Tuesday at 3am and the same flight was $214 instead of the $389 I saw on Sunday afternoon. Booked it right there with my phone on the bunk bed. Been doing it for three trips now and it usually saves me somewhere between $80 and $150. Is this an actual thing with airline pricing or did I just get lucky those times?
I flew Boston to Dublin two years back and saw the same thing, Sunday fares were around $400 but Tuesday at 3am they dropped to $230. Airlines dump unsold seats when their booking systems reset overnight, and Tuesday is a slow travel day so there's less competition. Keep doing it, but also check Wednesday around the same time because I've had luck there too.
Tuesday at 3am is the move, no question. I snagged a flight to Phoenix for $180 after watching it sit at $340 all weekend. Checked back Thursday night around 1am and it was back up again. The cheap window is real and it closes fast.
