The bus station in Tucson flipped my whole packing system
I used to be a carry-on only person, no exceptions. Last spring I got stuck in Tucson for 8 hours when a Greyhound broke down and they put us on a replacement that left 6 hours late. I watched this one older guy pull out a collapsible duffel from his jacket pocket and fill it with groceries he bought at the station store. Turns out he always packs a flat foldable bag in case he needs extra space for souvenirs or emergency supplies. Now I do the same thing, it weighs nothing and costs like 12 bucks on Amazon. Anyone else carry a backup bag they never thought they'd use until one bad travel day?

That "collapsible duffel from his jacket pocket" line got me, because my version of being prepared is carrying three pairs of socks in case one gets damp. I bought one of those flat bags after a similar mess in Flagstaff, and now it lives in my backpack like a security blanket I never actually use. The only time I remembered to bring it, I ended up filling it with snacks from a gas station because I panicked about a delay that never happened. So now I'm the guy hauling a bag of beef jerky and pretzels through customs, which is honestly a worse look than just buying a cheap tote if I needed it. Still, it beats my old system of shoving dirty laundry into a pillowcase, so maybe we're all just one bad bus ride away from becoming smarter packers.
