Warning: That hostel in Barcelona that's $12 a night is a trap
I booked a supposedly cheap bunk at the Barcelona Backpacker Hostel last spring and ended up sleeping on a mattress that had actual springs poking through with no sheets provided. The staff tried to charge me an extra "cleaning fee" of 15 euros at check-in too - has anyone else gotten hit with surprise fees like that?

...and then they hit you with the cleaning fee and you realize the whole "cheap" thing is just a way to get you in the door. It's like how grocery stores put milk in the back so you walk past everything else first. That hostel probably makes more money off those surprise charges than the actual bed rental. I've noticed this pattern everywhere now - the base price is just bait, and the real cost is hidden in add-ons nobody tells you about until you're already there. Hotels do it with resort fees, airlines with baggage, even phone plans with "service charges." Next time just pay a bit more for a place that lists the total price up front, it saves the headache.

$5 for a towel you didn't use? That's worse than the hostel in Chicago that charged me for parking I never had.

The 39 dollar hostel bed I booked in Austin last year ended up costing me 67 bucks after all the fees... and they charged me an extra 5 dollars for a towel that I didn't even use because I brought my own. It's like they build in these little traps everywhere you look, and the worst part is how normalized it's become. Jamie you're spot on about the grocery store milk trick, but I think it goes even deeper than that. Now places like car rental agencies and concert venues are doing the same thing with "convenience fees" and "location surcharges" that have nothing to do with actual convenience. The whole system is designed to make you feel stupid for not reading the fine print, but who has time to hunt through 20 lines of hidden charges for a simple bed for the night.
