Almost got hit by a falling AC unit at a thrift store last weekend

I was browsing the furniture section at Goodwill on Broadway when I heard a loud crash. A window AC unit fell from the top shelf, missed me by maybe 3 feet. The manager said it wasn't secured right. I used to grab heavy items from high shelves without thinking. Now I ask for help or use the store's ladder. Has anyone else had a close call at a thrift store that changed how you shop?

Never thought twice about grabbing stuff off high shelves before. Changing my ways after reading this.

My sister in law pulled a muscle last month reaching for cereal on the top shelf at the store and I still remember her face. Seems like everyone is always in a hurry and stretching for things without thinking about the fall. This whole thread has me looking at my own shortcuts differently too.

My dad tried to grab a bag of chips off the top shelf at the grocery store last year and ended up knocking over an entire display of canned tomatoes... the cleanup took forever and he still gets embarrassed when we walk down that aisle.
