I thought the cash envelope system was just for extreme couponers, but trying it for groceries this month saved me $87 over my usual card spending.

Has anyone else had a specific category where switching to cash made a real difference?

Wait, eighty-seven dollars in just one month? That's almost a whole grocery trip for free, how is that even possible?

It's totally possible if you have a card with rotating bonus categories. Last quarter mine gave 5% back on groceries and gas. That's five dollars back for every hundred spent. If you time big purchases with those categories, the cash back piles up fast. Some cards also have sign up bonuses that pay out after you meet a spending limit.

Honestly I used to think the same way, but then I started actually checking the cash back deals on my card's app every week. I got $12 back just from buying gas at the same station I always use, and another $15 from the pharmacy. It adds up way faster than you'd think.

Yeah "it adds up way faster than you'd think" is exactly what got me too. I used to roll my eyes at cash back stuff, figured it was pennies at best. But then I actually looked at my Amex offers last month and saw 10% back at Shell, which is where I get gas anyway. Ended up with like $18 just from that and another $7 from a random offer on pet supplies. It really does change your mind when you see it hitting your statement.
