That first $500 is like a weird test of willpower. The older guy who trained me when I started carrying mail used to keep his emergency cash in an old envelope taped to the back of a picture frame. Said it was the only way he could trick himself into forgetting about it on payday weekends. Meanwhile I stuffed mine in a sock drawer and ended up spending a third of it on a "really good deal" for a used snowblower from a neighbor. Definitely not a real emergency, but I did learn that snowblowers are heavy and awkward to push around.
