My car died on the same morning my paycheck hit, and the timing was almost funny
My alternator gave out on the drive to work on a Tuesday in March, and the tow plus repair ran me $612. Normally that would wreck me, but I had just finished building a $1,200 buffer fund after months of skipping takeout. I paid the shop in full, ate rice and beans for a week anyway out of habit, and still had $400 sitting in savings when Friday came. The weird part is I felt calmer than I did back when I had no money and no problems. Does anyone else find that a boring emergency feels way better than a surprise one?
The part where you say you "ate rice and beans for a week anyway out of habit" is what got me. You had $400 still sitting there and you were still eating like you were broke? That is wild to me. I get it though, once your brain learns that money can vanish overnight it does not just turn that off because your account looks fine. My buddy does the same thing, he finally got ahead and still checks his balance like five times a day. It is kinda messed up that being scared sticks around longer than the actual problem does.
